Since you are 10.04 it is better if you can upgrade current version of 
modemmanager package(which actually is responsible for configuring your 
drivers under linux). however in order to do so you might have add third 
party PPA.

   however i do recommennd caution while using the PPA

 i too had face similar problems with same Modem on the lucid install. 
after upgrading the modemmanager packages those seem to have went away. 
furthermore i do get performance at par to windows with newer versions of 
ubuntu(most likely due to them shipping with current version of the 
modemmanager )
