During the configuration of X you will be asked whether Frequencies
should be written to the configuration file. You should choose "No".
You should also check that "DDC" is enabled --- which it is by
default.

The point is that older monitors were unable to supply the supported
frequencies to the video card so the user had to supply them. More
recent video monitors and cards can "talk to each other through DDC"
and thus find a mutually acceptable mode.

Of course, if this procedure fails (which is bound to for some
non-compliant hardware) then you will have to muck around finding out
the relevant frequencies and entering them in the xorg.conf file.
