In particular, I don't really know what "multipath" means --- perhaps you can enlighten us! :-) Note that "dmsetup" is a low-level utility. To do anything even slightly complex with this it is best to use some tools which will automate things and prevent lock-ups. Depending on your needs the tools could be shell scripts, multipath-tools, lvm2 or evms.
