One point that is worth noting is that Indian academic institutes and banks in the late 80's and early 90's got their systems from Indian software organisations which specialised in Unix. An interesting thesis topic for a sociologist is how this "Unix country" became a "MicroSoft country" in the late 90's and the early 21st century. At least part of the reason was that these organisations looked upon Linux and GNU as "toys" for "hobbyists"---not for professionals. They failed to recognise that Unix itself had similar roots.
