I sometimes wonder why you really need to voice such strong opinions,
as "hang its head in shame"... it does make me smile though! :-)

As for bc's defense, bc -l on GNU bc does provide a fair set of useful
functions predefined. That apart, bc conforms to the POSIX draft
standard, so it conforms to a predefined (old) standard, which is one
of the reasons it doesn't do too much, but works well at what it is
supposed to do...
