i have been running remote servers (both vps and dedicated servers) which presumably are expected to be webservers, and have yet to see these permissions changed. > > > And what is the > > justification of altering the permissions they have given? > > I presume they retain the permissions that comes default, even after > installing apache & /var/www need not be document root. > > Please verify how Ubuntu & Fedora handles phpmyadmin etc., when > installed through their respective apt or yum. > I have no idea. And anyway, I feel that if anyone asks how to save php (or any files) under /var/www I would advise them to set up a directory on their home directory and save them there - they can be accessed through a virtual host. I would further advise them not to touch /var/www in any way. Except for maybe altering the default index.html (which can be done by root and is usually rarely changed during the lifetime of the server) -- regards kg http://lawgon.livejournal.com _______________________________________________ ILUGC Mailing List: http://www.ae.iitm.ac.in/mailman/listinfo/ilugc
