VirtualBox simulates a PC (processor and peripherals). The simulation is so complete that any general-purpose operating system can be run within the simulated system, without modifications. The operating system running within VirtualBox is called the guest. VirtualBox achieves speed by trying to execute the guest instructions natively on the host processor (instead of simulating them in software), as much as possible.
