Both KDE4 and Gnome when mixed with Firefox and Open Office need good
amount of RAM .
You can use KDE3.X which comes as default in debian lenny and is very
stable (to say the least)

*Ubuntu is an unstable distribution and relies heavily on community
feedback in the case of xubuntu its definitely less than ubuntu . Go
for XFCE on Debian( even on testing(currently squeeze) you will it
very stable .
