GIMP is the pinnacle of open source image processing tools, and I think it
is great in the hands of an interactive user. For the requirement of the OP,
writing a GIMP plugin or using the schema language (if he does not know
already) might be too steep to solve a one time problem. Of course, GIMP ban
be used in batch mode to get what he wants. But I feel GIMP was designed to
be interactive while Imagemagick was designed to be used from the command
line as an online/in-line/embedded image processor.

I have used both GIMP and Imagemagick in my work. GIMP for interactive use
and ImageMagick for embedded/in-line usage.
