I think that the idea that a company should have a single set of application stack is a good one. It enables and empowers the IT department. However, the agility that is provided by a set of systems within a variety is also something that teams benefit from. As long as data is not kept within silos making it difficult to cross-talk, variety could probably be encouraged.
