if you look at Baskars posts you will see frequent mention of faculty
development programs - what has happened is that AU Coimbatore from this
semester on insists on these two electives, and the faculty has realised
that like it or not, they have to teach it.

all these setups are being done by the college managements and they are
paying cash money for them - once money is paid, they value the
investment. There is a company that offers to setup a 60 seat FOSS lab
for just 2.5L (from their brochure, it looks like they are not only
charging for installation, but for the software also). So Baskar is very
competitive and has captured the market. All the managements in the
region are also aware that Suguna Spark Business School is the first
College in the region (and possibly in the country) which has got AICTE
recognition without spending 1 paisa on software (apart from the
installation cost). Many universities and colleges in the region are
also decided to move to FOSS in *all* departments - the only thing
stopping them is the non-availability of FOSS alternatives in some
areas.

And as for follow ups, Coimbatore LUG is very much there - please see
the pictures of the latest meeting where we combined a one day workshop
on the syllabus topics with our meeting. The LUG meeting took place
after the workshop - around 150 people attending. At the meeting the
dean agreed - 1. to offer the college as a fallback location in case
some college fails it its commitment, and 2 - to give OOD permission to
any student who wants to attend a LUG meeting or workshop conducted by
us (of course they asked for a certificate from us in each case to make
sure the student has *actually* attended the meeting).

Oh, and several students have approached us to help them prepare for
GSoC ...
