A friend of mine has built a custom Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP) system based on the Drupal engine and it has been in production since 2007. To go beyond building web sites, you need to have a fairly deep understanding of Drupal. Once you understand the architecture of Drupal (or any other) package then it is up to as to how you can extend it.
