If you want alternatives, there is already quite a few. MariaDB, Drizzle are MySQL based. PostgreSQL is a mature alternative as well. In some cases, the nosql databases such as couchdb and mongodb can be a good option too. There is no shortage of choices however MySQL as a brand has a lot of name recognition and Oracle's move is essentially to monetize it more by making the db semi proprietary. This isn't surprising considering the history of MySQL which has dabbled with proprietary extensions for a long time now. My suggestion: Use Postgres.
