Run "badblocks" in r/w mode and see if any errors are reported.

run smarctl -d /dev/sdX X=device alphabet and note any errors reported.

For me, in a couple of instances, the HDD would keep "loosing" the
partition table. Seagate's DOS tools would report no error.   smarctl
did report errors found in the HDD's.

 It might help if you include a note along with the HDD stating the
problem you are experiencing (and not listed in their error codes) and
they might replace the HDD.

Hopefully they will not say we do not support Linux :)
