I dunno about BOSS, but its very much possible to upgrade linux mint
from repos . Previously there were issues with linux mint debian
edition (LMDE) because of the fact that its a rolling distribution ,
but now they have come up with update packs[1] to solve the issue .

If you are curious to experiment . You can keep proper[2] lines in
/etc/apt/sources.list and do #apt-get update and #apt-get dist-upgrade

1. LMDE update packs http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=1781
2. Proper - depending on the distro and sometimes ( with caution )
the parent distro name + release .
