GNU/Linux can be run in various modes termed as "runlevels". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Runlevel#Linux "single user mode" is runlevel 1. To change run levels, we use the command "init". For example, to change to runlevel 1, run the following from command prompt (as root). init 1 To boot into run level 1, you need to modify your "kernel" line in grub configuration.
