I have not read the article but I believe that Linux or UNIX never had
desktop potential.

Ubuntu and Redhat almost got there but I am not sure if they even got
as far as Apple did.

Linux is still heavily used for server applications. That is its forte.

Geeks use it in desktop. These facts may not change.
