In many cases, the thread gets hijacked by meta discussions. This thread itself was meta, albeit intentionally. Now it has become meta-meta :-).
IMO, thread hijacking is the main problem that scares newbies away - they ask a simple question and it gets hijacked by discussions that go tangential at many levels!!
