Dear all, Myself conducted a three days FOSS workshop in Syed Ammal Engineering College, Ramanathapuram (http://www.syedengg.ac.in) from 10/11/2013 to 12/11/2013.
The college management decided to train all technical staff and teaching faculties on GNU/Linux platform. On the first day, the session was conducted for Technical staffs of CSE/IT departments. An internal FOSS Repository server was setup using CentOS and configured for Fedora-19 remote installation (the whole setup process was done by the System Administrator following the instructions, almost quick and faster). The second day, an introductory session on using Fedora-19 was conducted for CSE/IT/Civil/MBA/S&H Department faculties. The faculty members installed Fedora-19 using remote installation method and configured YUM repository and after that everyone got busy with searching and installing software through YUMEX/Apper and kept working on them. On the last day, the same introductory session on using Fedora-19 was given for Physics/Mechanical/EEE/ECE departments and they also practiced the same as above. The following were some of the FOSS tools which was introduced to them during the workshop. 1. Scilab 2. GNU PSPP 3. LibreOffice 4. CodeBlocks 5. NetBeans 6. FreeCAD 7. BRLCAD 8. DraftSight (Similar to AutoCAD, though not a FOSS alternative) 9. ArgoUML 10. QUCS I noticed a lot of enthusiasm among the Technical staff and Teaching faculties during the workshop and the System Administrator told me that, he would be implementing GNU/Linux and FOSS tools wereever possible in all departments. The college management encourages everyone to use GNU/Linux and FOSS alternatives for the academic needs. I would like to thank the following persons for organzing the workshop. Dr. P. Marimuthu - Principal Mr. N. Karchikeyan - HOD / CSE Mr. Sivakumar - System Administrator S.
