Some time ago, I had read about members of this group intending to create an
OSS variant of AutoCAD.
NIC has created a CAD app operating on Li and known as CollabCAD
www.collabcad.com.
CollabCAD intends to provide technological edge to the Indian manufacturing
industry, which cannot compete with the hightech MNCs using advance CAD
packages worth more than 10 times the turn over of most of the manufacturing
industry.
This is a laudable effort of lots of organisations and individuals. This
effort is spearheaded by Dr. H. K. Suhas <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>.
Though CollabCAD is presently a closed source, non-GPLed app; it may be
possible that some kind of expertise exchange can occur where possibly, an
app rivaling AutoCAD can be created (in the wild) by OSS community.
Please send mails to Dr. HK Suhas, if you think that you can contribute to
either CollabCAD or any of its interfaces/training etc. and possibly design a
framework for an OSS CAD app (CAD in the wild :-) or enhancement to QCAD.

For those of you who may not know about CollabCAD :
Vikram Sarabhai Space Center and Bhabha Atomic Research Center have
accepted CollabCAD Software after the successful completion of a few of
the Bench Mark tests. The CollabCAD would be inducted into these two
organizations in June and July.
A Consortium has been made around CollabCAD comprising
(a) National Informatics Center: CollabCAD
(b) Vikram Sarabhai Space enter: FEAST & PARAS (Finite Element
Analysis and Structure-Aerodynamics Solutions)
(c) Bhabha Atomic Research Center: Parallel Display & Rendering of
Images using Cluster (LINUX) with CollabCAD Mechanical Assembly also
being Cluster enabled.
(d) National aerospace Laboratories: All CFD Solutions from Low
Subsonic to Hypersonic Flows
(e) Aeronautical Development agency: FINESSE & FINGRAF-Finite Element
(Composite) Analysis
(f) TATA Technologies: KNEXT-Knowledge Based Design & Manufacturing
(g) Structural Engineering Research Center: Steel & RC Design &
Analysis, Risk analysis of structures
All the solutions have been linked to CollabCAD through either IGES
or XML or specialized links.
A few Solutions like CADEM Technology (NC Solutions linked through
IGES), CASTING Solutions of Prof. Ravi of IIT Bombay (linked through STL
Link) and NISA of EMRC linked through IGES are not the members of the
Consortium.
Further, all these solution Providers have the right to fix the
price of each solution and license the same to th end users.
Today,CollabCAD offers the following:

2. Surface Modeling
3. Solid Modeling
4. Feature Based Solid Modeling
5. Constraint manager
6. Tolerance Manager
7. Bill of Material
8. Enterprise Resource Planning and Customer Relations Management:
COMPIERE Open Source ERP & CRM Solution has been integrated with CollabCAD.
9. Concurrent Design / Engineering: ZOPE is used for this for both
Archival and for Concurrent Engineering and Security etc.
10. Toll Pallette (XML based): This is a powerful tool for customization
of parts library etc.
