i think parted is slightly dangerous, although then, almost everything
is dangerous in the linux world! :)

but apart from that....
what you could do is that you could create other partitions with the
space you have as ext3...
and then mount them as maybe 
/usr 
/home etc...

that would do effectively the same work, and give protection from
wipeouts if any...
