no i am not using any kind of patches, and for ur information i am using
RedHat 8.0.
Using the latest kernel release 2.4.20. and i have no devices earlier
intalled on my system.
One more thing u have said to passw hdc=noprobe and hdd=noprobe, but will u
plz tell me how to do that. i am a newbie to linux.

  pass hdc=noprobe hdd=noprobe as boot params to your
kernel. This should stop the probe. BTW are you using
alan's patches (with mandrake)? Seemed to be a problem
somewhere with that. Kindly mention the kernel and
patches you have installed. Your VIA ide controller's
second channel seems to have no devices installed. Did
you remove any devices recently from the secondary
channel?? That might be a reason for the probe...
