hello every one

where do you think a completely novice user should start from before even
installing linux on his system??

I am working in a semiconductor distributor company.
As a new product I have to test an Internal modem
for this I need to install Linux and test the same.
I have no clue about linux, except that it is a free OS and is extremely
robust and a lot of +ves.

help please
