For GPL, your best bet is a2ps . You will get a PS file, highly customisable (duplex? n-UP? footer? margins?). The ps2pdf conversion is trivial, and left as an exercise to the reader. Be warned: Text files converted to PDF do not look nice, the "beauty" of a PDF page is in its layout.
