under redhat8, in the middle of some file-transfers over nfs, a
mysterious freeze and hang happened.

no option but to switch off the pc and to reboot.

since then, the pc boots fine till the dmesg screenfulls (!), then the
screen goes black as if booting into runlevel 5, and twenty seconds
later falls into runlevel 3, with an error report on font not
initialized; 7100 not found . . .

figured the x font server must have screwed up. checked all the
sub-directories, everything seemed fine, checked the port the x fonts
server is up and on unix port 7100, did some google-search, and
discovered other people also faced this problem with X at version 4.2.0.
the solution provided is to manually add the font sub-directories into
the XFree86Config file. did so.

this time, the pc boots and shows the graphical log-in screen. type the
username and password, the screen blanks out again, and again the
graphical login screen displays.

so run to ctrl+alt+F1 or F2 and log in at the shell with the same
username and password, which works fine. so that means the username,
passwords are not reset or corrupt.

the log file of X shows no errors or warnings either.

strange situation. what is the solution?

??
