You can consider taking a backup of your entire Linux file system, (when in
single user mode). After this you can restore your system on any harware
that :
1.)  Is supported by The Kernel /distribution that you just backupd up (you
would have to change network settings, modules.conf , fstab etc)
2.) Has a Linux installation with free space greater than your backup.
3) has Grub ;)

You can test it by restoring the backup on a seperate partotion, mounting it
in fstab and then editing grub.conf to boot into this new system, if
everything works fine, you can go ahead and install grub in this sytem

Mithun B had given a presentation on this at one the previous meets (IIT, I
believe)
