first you have say if you have an external modem or internal modem. if you have
internal modem then it might not work on redhat. but any external modem will be
detected if it is switched on when the machine boots. then it will say new hardware
found and will give choices whether to configure, or do nothing. then if you select
configure then it will be automatically configured.
after the machine has booted into redhat, you click on run program in the redhat menu
and type kppp and press enter. then you can see a setup button which you should click.
then you will be asked whether you want a wizard or a dialogue setup. the wizard id
better if you are new. if you know on which COM port your modem is then you can try
the dialogue based setup. after giving the telephone number, user name and password
log out and then log in and then again run kppp and click connect. that should work
(if you have an external modem)
as for listening to mp3, redhat does not come with the codecs needed for playing mp3
due to copyright reasons. so please go the site www.xmms.org and download the mp3
plugin (there are different plugins for different versions of redhat). then copy this
plugin in your home directory and after logging in as root double click the file you
downloaded. after two more dialogue boxes you will be done installing.
then you can play mp3 songs in the audio player.
as for movies you will have to get the mpg plugin from the xmms site and install it.
then it should play movies also (though i did not try this)
all the best
