In general, wouldn't you prefer the native package manager for your distribution to manage packages instead of doing it by hand? Installing by RPM (or deb) ensures easy upgrades, no loss of customisations and elimination of various dependency issues. If you don't use the package manager you may as well be running (ugh!)
