hi buddy

1) TO Get Back ur Shell

well u should boot ur PC in single usermode that u can do
i guess .Then u go in etc/inittab there u go to the line
default start level make it to 3.

2)
Now reboot the system well u have the PC with the shell
& now if u wish change the  /etc/X11/XF86Config there u
can change the setting but play safe there .

This is the way i resolved the problem i have once ;-))

Your monitor is not able to support the refresh rates being set. Try to
reduce the color depth or screen size to minimum and then work your way
up.
Also confirm that our display card is havng atleast 1mb RAM for 800x600
or 2mb for 1024x768 resolutions.
