I have also faced similiar problem. I tar+gzip on RH
7.2 system, ftp in binary mode to solaris 8 or 9
(intel version)  running GNU tar, gunzip.

Still when I untar on solaris it gives the same
problem. On original machine it untars without a
hitch.

No Solutions from me.
