Hi,
Sify provides internet to us using a LAN connection from the cable operators server to our homes. I set up my LAN card, ip address, DNS server settings properly such that I could ping my own computer and the sify gateway. However, they require that we use a client to login each time. They have a client for linux which I installed, but I am not sure whether it works properly. I run in console only so I use lynx to browse. I can browse the local sify s erver w ithout problem, but when I type, say "lynx http://www.google.com" it says "Alert! Host not found" or something similiar. The problem doesn't exist on windows. The sify customer service doesn't provide support for linux, so what am I supposed to do?
OS - Redhat 7.0
Kernel 2.2.16
If possible, go to a friend's PC who has a similar connection, see how it connects. I presume it would be some web-based login, or maybe some TCP/IP feed. If you can, make out what it is doing and maybe you can write a script of your own to do the same.
I am using a similar connection from an obscure ISP and have written couple of tiny Python scripts that connect/check/reconnect and help me to stay connected. Yes, they feature as a cron job on my box. If it is a web-based login and you cannot fiddle with writing scripts, then look at the "curl" command.
HTH.
