The GPL says that if you make any modifications to the software and you
keep it to yourself and don't sell, redistribute it, you can keep the
modifications secret. So as long as Google is not selling their
OS/software, it's perfectly ok to continue without infringing the GPL.

Well, because Google has some pretty neat ideas which others don't
have! Honestly, Yahoo!, etc. have way to many users than GMail.
Basically Google's idea of having an invitation system did all the
magic for them. It ensured that the user base increases in an
exponential rate and they also get to control the number of users by
controlling the number of invites. That way, they could stess test the
Hardware and gradually improve the system. Otherwise, if they'd opened
all the gates for the users at the start, the system no matter how big
would have conked. Yahoo! guys don't have that privilege. They are the
biggest website in the world and it'd be hard for them to upgrade all
accounts to 2GB suddenly. But they are doing it gradually, it's already
1GB on Yahoo! and that's pretty good I'd say.

It is NEVER Linux OS. It's ``GNU/Linux'' OS. For more info follow this link
