Blunt and specific. OK, I can do that. :-) > At the moment we're all sitting around agreeing that an issue has been > identified, but none of us is actually doing anything to suggest steps > that can be taken to resolve it. I think the discussion has clearly shown at least three steps: 1. Don't perpetuate "humour" based on offensive stereotypes, or which are really veiled insults. 2. If you (no matter what gender you are) think something is offensive, speak out against it, to provide negative feedback to $whoever, and also so that other people understand what is and is not acceptable. 3. Make an active effort not to pass off the responsibility onto someone else. Think harder about what you, personally, can do to improve the situation. Think about what you might be doing to make it worse. (Other steps aren't as clear yet, but I think they will become so.) Note: There are two questions. How to encourage women to join the LUG or list, and how to encourage them to stay, once they've joined. All of the suggestions above address the latter question. I don't know offhand how to address the former, but I don't believe we can't come up with a few ideas if we put our minds to it. -- ams _______________________________________________ ilugd mailinglist -- ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd Archives at: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.user-groups.linux.delhi http://www.mail-archive.com/ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org/
