Hi, An organisation called the Critical Action Center in Movement (CACIM), and Sarai are jointly holding an event to discuss the implications of the open culture of the Internet to society at large. The idea is to try to understand the strengths and wekanesses of the open and cooperative approach fostered by the Internet, and how this approach is manipulated by governments and other agencies. For example, recent efforts in China to suppress access to Internet searches, the US government's request to examine records of search engines, and latent fears about the sheer magnitude of information that Google has access to, will all be covered. In addition, CACIM is interested in establishing contacts with individuals that can help them make effective use of Internet-based tools. The meeting is tentatively scheduled for the afternoon of the 2nd of March, and a formal announcement will be posted later. Subramanya Sastry of NewsRack fame was instrumental in getting the ball rolling on this, and will be on the panel, as will probably someone from CACIM. At the moment, we are interested in obtaining contact information for a few more panelists, and in any links to news stories, blogs, etc., in this area. Please feel free to email me directly with these items.
