You can use xrandr command present in X11 distribution. A sample session
with xrandr is below:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ xrandr
 SZ:    Pixels          Physical       Refresh
*0   1024 x 768    ( 271mm x 201mm )  *61        < active mode >
 1    800 x 600    ( 271mm x 201mm )   86  
 2    640 x 480    ( 271mm x 201mm )   86  
Current rotation - normal
Current reflection - none
Rotations possible - normal 
Reflections possible - none
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ xrandr -s 1
< switches to the 800x600 mode >
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ xrandr -s 0
< back to the 1024x768 mode >
