alsaconfig (and have tried previously); it always goes through the procedures
as though there are no problems, but then no sound. Also tried making a new
user account, but sound didn't work in that either.

Are you doing this in GNOME ? And, is ESD enabled in GNOME ? If not,
disable it by deselecting in "Sounds" tab of "Sound Preferences"
(System->Preferences->Sound) . To assure that no ESD is not running
execute 'killall esd'.

Rename any '.asoundrc' in $HOME to something else.

Now execute "alsamixer" on terminal, and see if "PCM", "Front", and "Wave"
playback controls are not muted and not zeroed.

If you've any .WAV files, try playing them using:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] aplay file.wav

If you don't have any .wav files, use:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] aplay `which aplay`

This will produce some noise, which you can cancel by pressing Ctrl+C .
If you still didn't get hear any noise, post output of 'dmesg' .
