Hi Inder,

Try formatting the harddisk with gparted [0]. If you do not have any
linux distro installed, try any live-cds. I guess most of them come
with a disk partitioner (mostly gparted). You can also give a try to
gparted live cd [1]
If you have a linux distro installed (which i am not sure as you talk
about windows), you can use cfdisk[3] to format you external harddisk.

PS: Please stay alert while formatting your harddisk. You never know
when you blink your eyes and all your data is gone.Happened to me
earlier and it is coming from personal experience :(
