I suggest you to go for ubuntu because the community is large and you can find 95% solutions on forum. I am also working on ibm project and db2 installs smoothly on ubuntu. First it shows one missing library , istall that using synaptic manager and then run the installer again. I downloaded db2 9.7( Latest version) tar.gz from ibm site. It perfectly works on ubuntu.
