Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant of Sophos, has responded to my blog asking not to use word hackers for criminals. What is your opinion?
"Uh-oh. I've really annoyed Swapnil Bhartiya. He's written a blog post<http://www.katonda.com/blog/1090/sophos-thinks-windows-computers-hackers-are-criminals>at Katonda which, amongst other things, takes me to task for referring to cybercriminals as "hackers". Bhartiva's complaint is one that many in the IT field share - that the media has taken the word "hacker", which used to mean simply someone who was a computer enthusiast, and now use it to mean someone who breaks into computer systems, writes malware or causes other forms of online mischief. I have some sympathy with Bhartiva's pedantry (after all, I'm the chap who blogged at length about how we should all say "Trojan horses" rather than "Trojans"<http://www.sophos.com/blogs/gc/g/2008/07/17/is-it-a-trojan-or-a-trojan-horse/>), but he and other zealots for the preservation of the older definition of the word "hacker" are missing one fact." http://www.sophos.com/blogs/gc/g/2010/04/26/word-hacker-carry/ -- Swapnil Bhartiya ------------------- KALKION.COM http://kalkion.com India's Major Science Fiction Website running on FOSS tools! _______________________________________________ Ilugd mailing list Ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd
