I happily used Jext[1] and jEdit[2] during my M$ days on a box with 256 MiB
RAM. jEdit has great community, large no. of addons, super-extensible. IIRC,
Jext is not maintained anymore.

And both being implemented in Java desktop technologies, which you means you
can debug^Wrun them anywhere.
