Arguably the most popular open desktop/laptop distributions of Linux are: - Ubuntu - Fedora - SuSE - Debian (my personal favourite) If you want to do the research, go to one of the sites other users have pointed you to, test out each distribution and stick to the one that suits you. If you're too lazy, just use Debian + KDE (purely my personal opinion).
