Try running the following sequence of commands, might work
sm56setup { to install the drivers, be sure to download the latest }
vi /etc/modues.conf
and enter the line if not present already : -
alias char-major-24 sm56
then from the command line :-
modprobe sm56
this should detect the sm56 module installed in your system.
try to run minicom and run the modem command ati7
