can't really say where you're going wrong with whatever you're using
to dial in to you're ISP (Some more detail from your side might help)
A good alternative could be a command line dialer called wvdial. So
what you basically do here is, login as root and type the following
'wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf'
this creates a wvdial.conf in your etc directory, which you edit using
any editor. What follows is you changing the Phone No., User Name,
Password in the wvdial.conf.
After you're finished changing wvdial.conf, all you do is type 'wvdial'
on your prompt, and there it is.
