Well, 
 here is a compendium of my problems:
 xine used to work pretty well with me in RH7.3 till I
also installed mplayer - then I started getting skips.
 I also installed mplayer and gmplayer in RH8.0 - very
nice really with lots of drivers and format support.
Now I have some niggling problems which experienced
user may shed light on:
 1) playing a video CD I get a small screen only which
does not enlarge to full size.
 2) in some files (avi's I think), I get 1.5 times the
movie that is the picture and then another half of the
picture together.
 any hints?

 otherwise it is pretty good. Xine was also very
comfortable if the format is supported (and there was
no skips).
