But at one point I did listen to the "acoustic" versions back to back with the released ones, and I would swear they sounded like the same takes of the vocals, acoustic guitars, and everything that was present in the mix on both.
This is correct - for the 'acoustic' versions, they used the album takes, but pulled down all the faders except for vocal and piano (or guitar), and sometimes percussion.
Now In This Hush is my favorite of these. The original record is an elaborate, amazing production - one of my very favorites - but when you strip it down to just guitar, vocal, and percussion, it's even more gorgeous.
