Both can be accessed very quickly from the Control Strip, and both have dramatic effects on the cooling of the CPU area. Turning off the display, by contrast, diminish the convection effect and thus raises CPU temperature. Unless one does solid, uninterrupted work on the iMac, even a short spell in Sleep mode may help reduce heat build-up. Just a thought...
