Have you tried replacing the batteries? (PRAM)battery death can cause
a black monitor. Theyre relatively cheap to replace, like $5. Since these
are at least 3-yr old computers, the batteries could well be going out
If that doesnt help, I would say sounds like a bad power supply as you
describe it, but I'm no tech expert.
You could pull the logic board/cd drive assembly from one of your "dead"
imacs and swap it into a working one. If it works, you know the
problem's not in that part. Follow the initial instructions in the
memory installation procedure to get them out

(for orig tray-loader cds). Once you pull the logic board/cd assembly you
can easily see the battery near the ram slot and replace it.
