iMovie works with video in DV format. The only way to transfer this 
is via Firewire. The USB port on the camcorder is probably to 
transfer still images (some video cameras can also make still images 
that are stored in a little card, rather than tape, and can be 
transferred via USB).
If you want digital video, then Firewire is the way to go.
