I don't think that the battery is covered by Apple. AppleCare and the 
Limited Warranty tend to explicitly state that they cover hardware 
problems caused by manufacturers defect. Dying batteries are scarcely 
that way due to manufacturers defect, so I'd guess 'not covered.' Only 
way to know is to call and ask....

It's only US$6 at RadShack (or somewhere thereabouts), so I've never 
bothered to ask....
