Elizabeth: As John said, check startup items - PD does indeed put something called "Kodak Precision Startup" in the startup folder. I had problems when it was installed, removed it, and found it is not even needed; PD runs fine without it.
I don't know, though, if this is the cause of the more serious problem you seem to be having upon installing new applications. Do you rebuild the desktop after installing?
